CASFER strives to develop the next generation of engineers, the future pioneers of a Nitrogen Circular Economy. We realize the importance and the value of educational outreach in our goals of longevity and future sustainability. We hope to establish valuable resources for educators and outreach coordinators to be able to utilize, to help students understand the importance of fertilizer and begin to understand how fertilizer impacts the world around us. CASFER eagerly provides the following lesson plans as stepping stones for K-12 students to learn about the nitrogen cycle and the nitrogen circular economy.

1. The Problem with Phosphate and Acid Rain

Students will test the impact of fertilizer and acid rain on pond water.

2. What's in Our Water?

Students will use water testing strips to see what is in our water, and compare drinking water, to a local water source, and to water with added fertilizers.

3. Plantable Note Paper and Seed-balls

Students will create an experiment to compare the effects of fertilizer on flowers. Students will create seed balls to grow flowers and measure their rates of growth.

4. What Plants Eat

Students will learn the basic differences between plants and animals, including what they eat and how they consume nutrients.

5. Where Does Water Go?

Students will create a soil model to demonstrate how contaminants, such as phosphates and nitrates, filter through and out of our soil and enter ground water.
