Dr. Lopez-Ruiz was born and raised in Tarragona, located in the Catalonia region in Northeastern Spain.  He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2007 at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili.  He came to the U.S. as an international exchange student at Bucknell University in 2006 and received a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2009.  He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia in 2014.  He joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a post-doctoral researcher in 2015 and became a full staff member in the Advanced Energy Systems Group in 2017.  Dr. Lopez-Ruiz works on the development of electro- and thermo-catalytic processes for the generation of hydrogen, biofuels, and chemicals from renewable and waste resources.
