Dilution

Definition

Dilution is the process of reducing the concentration of a solute in a solution by adding more solvent. The solute is the substance being dissolved, while the solvent is the dissolving medium The total amount of solute remains constant while the volume of the solution increases, resulting in a lower concentration.

Before Dilution: Initial State

The solution has a smaller volume.

The amount of solute remains constant.

Solute particles are closely packed.

This leads to a higher concentration.

After Adding Solvent: Diluted State

The total volume increases.

The amount of solute remains unchanged.

Solute particles become more dispersed.

This results in a lower concentration.
