Electrolysis

Definition

Electrolysis as a technique used to break apart chemical compounds using electricity. The word "electro-" means using using electricity while "lysis" means to break apart, so the word "electrolysis" literally means to break something apart using electricity. One common example is water splitting, where electrolysis separates water into hydrogen and oxygen.
