Mechanical Engineering

Definition

CASFER is an NSF Engineering Research Center, which means that we are at the forefront of engineering! Our Center works with many different kinds of engineers to implement our vision and further scientific advancement.

Many of our researchers specialize in mechanical engineering, which is vital in helping us create testbeds and make a sustainable fertilizer!

According to Columbia University, "One of the most diverse and versatile engineering fields, mechanical engineering is the study of objects and systems in motion. As such, the field of mechanical engineering touches virtually every aspect of modern life, including the human body, a highly complex machine.

"The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the marketplace. To accomplish this, the mechanical engineer must be able to determine the forces and thermal environment that a product, its parts, or its subsystems will encounter; design them for functionality, aesthetics, and durability; and determine the best manufacturing approach that will ensure operation without failure."

The mechanical engineers at CASFER work hard to ensure that the technology that we create is the very best it can be. They use their creative problem solving skills to tackle the global issue of hunger and sustainability by helping to create a fertilizer that benefits agriculture and our planet.
