Precipitation

Definition

Precipitation is a chemical reaction in which dissolved molecules in a solution combine to form an insoluble solid known as a precipitate.

Chemical precipitation is widely used in water and wastewater treatment to remove contaminants such as heavy metals, phosphates, and other dissolved pollutants. Reagents are added to react with dissolved species and form solid compounds that settle out of solution.
