About the Role

Performs specialized post – terminal degree or J.D. work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with post-terminal or J.D. studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of a law faculty member with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.

Required Qualifications

Post-terminal degree or J.D. in area of project specialization knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize, and prioritize activities and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

Candidates possess a J.D. or PhD earned within the past several years or expected before January 1, 2024; a strong academic record; excellent analytical and writing skills; and demonstrated interest and background in environmental or water law and policy. Previous experience in law practice or policy is helpful but not necessary. Scientific, technical, or economic skills related to public policy analysis are helpful but not necessary qualifications.

Essential Functions

This is a full-time, 12-month staff position for one year only.  

  • Performs specialized Post Terminal or J.D. work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research.

  • Responsible for participating in a research project associated with Terminal Degree or J.D.

  • Work evaluated based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project.

  • The research fellow will primarily be responsible for participating in an NSF funded research project.

  • The position involves research and writing in the law and policy of water quality and nutrient loading caused by non-point sources.

  • Fellow will also assist the Center’s director by organizing workshops, attending meetings, giving presentations, and participating in other outreach efforts.

  • Work is performed under supervision of a law faculty member with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project.

  • May supervise student research fellows.
