CASFER is an NSF Engineering Research Center, which means that we are at the forefront of engineering! Our Center works with many different kinds of engineers to implement our vision and further scientific advancement.

One of the most common types of engineering that our researchers do is chemical engineering, which sits at the cross-section of chemistry and engineering and is vital to our goal of making sustainable fertilizer.

According to the American Chemical Society, "Chemical engineering involves the production and manufacturing of products through chemical processes. This includes designing equipment, systems, and processes for refining raw materials and for mixing, compounding, and processing chemicals. Chemical engineers translate processes developed in the lab into practical applications for the commercial production of products, and then work to maintain and improve those processes. They rely on the main foundations of engineering: math, physics, and chemistry."

Our chemical engineers work hard to make sure that the chemical processes that we use are not only efficient and sustainable, but economical. Chemistry is vital to agriculture and it plays a leading role in making fertilizer, that both benefits the plants and doesn't harm the environment. We are so grateful for our chemical engineers.
